Read below to take a step into the world I hope to one day help create.
'It will never happen to us..' How many times have we as security professionals heard this phrase? Having experienced this mentality firsthand, I have made it my mission to change this mindset from businesses and business owners entirely. You wouldn't leave the keys to your home or car just sitting out in the open for anyone to grab, so why do so many companies refuse to invest in a proper security program for their organization?
Having experienced those exact words firsthand, it inspired me to create my own vendetta for quelling this mindset in so many businesses around the globe. I think it is a common pain-point that I have seen for many security professionals in the industry, and constantly ask myself, ‘How do we change this?’
I believe that through both education and demonstration we can better inform those management personnel that make these decisions. The cybersecurity landscape has evolved, and I feel it should no longer be ‘just another part of IT.’ Cybersecurity affects the business as a whole just like accounting or HR. If a company suffers a breach, how well equipped are they to handle it? Do they have insurance? Were backups stored in a safe off-site location? Were there even security controls in place that could have prevented it to begin with? In the case of many small/medium sized businesses, a data breach could quite possibly result in the company closing their doors – permanently.
My vision involves creating a workspace where cybersecurity isn’t seen as a necessary evil to most businesses but instead, as a mindset that is spread throughout the entire organization. This should be seen as paramount to organizations across the globe, as with each passing second, there is a chance that your business could be the next target. Let’s work together towards this common goal so that we can better protect not only ourselves, but companies all around the world from the persistent and constant threat of today’s cyber criminals and threat actors.
